Is Screen Time Really the Best Use of My Day?

In a world filled with endless digital entertainment—from streaming platforms to social media—it’s easier than ever to spend hours scrolling, watching, and engaging with content. Whether it’s Netflix, Instagram, YouTube, or Twitter, these platforms offer a quick escape and are designed to hold our attention. I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with watching a show or scrolling through social media. But I’m realizing that my time might often be better spent on things that bring deeper fulfillment. Here’s why I’m choosing to prioritize my time differently and focus on what truly matters.

The Allure of Digital Entertainment and the Subtle Cost of Time

Digital platforms make entertainment and connection effortless. There’s something for everyone—favorite shows, the latest news, friends’ updates, funny videos, and more. While it’s fun and even refreshing to enjoy these things, the ease of access can lead us to spend far more time on screens than intended. Algorithms are designed to keep us engaged, suggesting content tailored to our interests, autoplaying the next video, or nudging us with notifications. Without realizing it, hours slip by.

While entertainment has its place, I began to reflect on whether these habits align with my deeper values and priorities. Psalm 90:12 says, “Teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” Time is a gift, and each moment offers an opportunity to grow, serve, and build something lasting. Spending significant time online can become a subtle distraction from this purpose, pulling me away from things that nourish my soul and relationships.

Choosing What Fulfills: Purpose Over Passive Consumption

The challenge with too much screen time is that it often leaves me feeling unfulfilled. While there’s nothing wrong with occasional entertainment, endless scrolling and watching tend to fill time without providing lasting satisfaction. I’ve come to realize that time spent in pursuits like studying Scripture, engaging in meaningful conversations, working on personal projects, or even taking a walk outside brings a sense of accomplishment and peace that digital consumption rarely does.

In Ephesians 5:15-16, we’re encouraged to “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.” Choosing purpose over passive consumption isn’t about rejecting entertainment or social media altogether; it’s about seeking activities that align with God’s purpose and bring fulfillment that digital distractions can’t provide. When I reflect on how I spend my time, it reminds me to be intentional, using my days for things that truly matter.

Practicing Moderation and Guarding the Heart

A balanced approach to screen time is essential. Engaging with digital content can be enjoyable, but it’s important to set boundaries. Philippians 4:8 encourages us to think on things that are “true…honorable…just…pure…lovely…commendable…excellent…praiseworthy.” This doesn’t just guide what we watch or read but how we spend our time overall. By being selective about both the content I consume and the amount of time I spend on screens, I find it easier to keep my heart and mind aligned with God’s values.

Moderation isn’t about setting rigid rules but practicing discernment—choosing to engage in ways that uplift rather than distract. This might mean setting time limits on social media, being intentional about watching only certain shows, or simply reminding myself to engage meaningfully rather than mindlessly.

Finding Fulfillment in Real-Life Connections

One of the most rewarding aspects of reducing screen time has been rediscovering the joy of real-life connections. Time spent with family, friends, or in quiet reflection brings a depth of joy that no digital interaction can replicate. By setting aside the screens, I’m able to engage in moments of true connection, experience God’s creation, and reflect on His work in my life.

When I choose to be present with others or dedicate time to personal growth, I find a sense of peace and fulfillment. Rather than feeling drained, I’m reminded of God’s goodness and His presence in everyday life. These moments can bring a far greater joy than anything I might find online.

Living with Purpose: Investing in What Matters Most

Ultimately, my decision isn’t about rejecting digital entertainment or social media completely but about embracing a life of intentionality. As I consider how best to use my time, I’m learning to prioritize what truly fulfills—things that help me grow spiritually, strengthen my relationships, and live with purpose.

Living this way means being intentional with each moment, not because entertainment is bad but because other pursuits can bring greater joy and peace. The goal is not to eliminate every distraction but to be mindful, choosing to invest in things that have lasting value. By aligning my time with what matters most, I’m able to live more fully, honor God, and find deeper satisfaction each day.
